The effect is not one of (pre) post-modern nudging, but a questioning of the conventions through the director's humanizing gaze. Go to Full Review

[Seven Men From Now] is perhaps the best Western I have seen since the war. It is only the memory of The Naked Spur and The Searchers that makes me reticent. Go to Full Review

Nick F Nov 25 Seven Men From Now is arguably Randolph Scott’s best western, made in 1956 from a superb script by Burt Kennedy – a fine Western actor himself - and with outstanding directing from the great Budd Boetticher whose incisive touch hall-marked many Western movies. Scott was one of the best of Western actors because his rugged, leathery, weather-worn appearance made him look the part rather than someone just acting it. Here, he plays a vengeful ex-sheriff hunting down seven men who robbed a stagecoach of gold bullion, and murdered his wife, one of the passengers. On the way, he encounters a couple of settlers, John and Annie Greer (a sensitive performance from Gail Russell) and helps them on their way, not knowing that Annie’s husband is transporting the stolen gold, though wasn’t involved in the robbery. There is obvious attraction between Scott and Russell but Scott is focussed on catching the stage robbers who include a leering and insolent Lee Marvin. The climax of the movie is unpredictable so inevitably tension mounts as Scott sets off for a showdown. All the characters in this film are well-defined and well-acted, the strong storyline grips the attention as it unfolds and the superb directorial touch of Budd Boetticher combine to deliver one of the best and most-engaging Westerns of the period. REVIEWED by Nick Fletcher See more 06/01/2023 Another good one right here that I will highly recommend James Welch, Henderson, Arkansas, June 2, 2023 See more 08/30/2021 Surprisingly good and unpredictable. All the lead characters have three dimensions, with Masters (Lee Marvin) being unusually complicated for a 1950's Hollywood outlaw. Sad about Gail Russell, though. The ravages of alcohol aged her prematurely. See more 04/02/2020 Spare, and relentless. Everything a vengeance story set in that world known as the mythical movie "West" should be.
