Nick M This was definitely a Max Linder film, but it seems that he's become stuck in time. Comedy is growing beyond its cinematic roots in the 1920s, much of which had been established by Linder a decade and more ago. The likes of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, and Douglas Fairbanks are all experimenting with new formats and angles for their films, and while this offering by Max Linder is much larger in scope than his earlier work, he clearly isn't maturing at the same rate as his fresher contemporaries. That isn't to say there isn't anything to see here; the zoo sequence in particular was worth watching. The gags and situational comedy, however, were mostly dated, and the narrative was a bit of a meandering mess. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/13/24 Full Review Audience Member awesome example of slapstick comedy very funny Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member One of the only surviving Feature Films by French Comedian Max Linder who was a great comedian who made films in the US from 1920-22 then went back to Paris in 23' and sadly took his life. He truly was a cinematic talent he was a subtle clever comedian & was far more subtler & effective director than Chaplain & for some years was his direct rival. This is a clever situational comedy that requires a viewing. It's fast & exciting & since there is scarce a Max Linder film left it makes it all the more worthwhile. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Linder is one of those talents deserving wider recognition. He stretches a string of gags into a very entertaining feature that combines a great deal of dexterity, a great deal of brains and nerve (best use of blackface I've seen in a long time), and a strong supporting cast. There's a mirror sequence here as good as Duck Soup. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member comedy about the consequnces of breaking a mirror Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member one of the master piece and the only one i saw of Linder. i was told that chaplin and keaton adapted a lot from his silent movies and improved a lot.
