      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Part creature feature, part war movie, and part social commentary, Shadow in the Cloud doesn't always blend its ingredients evenly -- but it's frequently pulpy fun.

You'll need to suspend your disbelief a little more than you might think, even for a sci-fi story, but Shadow in the Cloud is still a fairly fun creature feature.

parkssunflowerranch My husband and I looked at each other and said Well that was stupid! after the movie ended. It was a quasi 1950s Japanese horror movie with a Griffin instead of Godzilla. It had nothing to do with WWII other than the time period, aircraft and costumes. A boring one person show. My husband thought whom ever wrote it had to have been high on drugs. I want my wasted time and money back! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/10/21 Full Review Tracy M The concept lacked in so many ways and the execution was unbearable- a woman hanging on the underside of a plane while in the air - seriously. Granted everything in the movie was fairytale - it was just the last straw that made this movie horrible to watch. There were only 6 people in the theater and 2 of them walked out in the first 30 min. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/09/21 Full Review Whtraven Not quite what I was expecting based on the previews, but its fun. Id say about half of this movie is good while the other half has the guys behaving what I hope is far worse than men of that time would behave, has occasionally just flat out unbelievable action sequences and/or is heavy handed on the women empowerment theme (especially at the end). I didnt have any issues with the historical accuracy. There were women pilots during the war who delivered planes and supplies overseas, so that wasnt a stretch for me. And I enjoyed the gremlin (another WWII fictionally accurate creature). The problem with this movie is that its far too heavy handed in its message and uneven throughout. Probably best views at matinee pricing or video rental. Alexandra Heller-Nicholas ABC Radio (Australia) Shadow in the Cloud is an enjoyable popcorn movie that promises in-your-seat jumps with a handful of gender politics thrown in for good measure. Rated: 2/5 Jan 12, 2021 Full Review Adam Graham Detroit News There's just enough here for 80 minutes of action, and Liang keeps the thrills coming and the twists turning at a brisk pace. Rated: B Jan 11, 2021 Full Review Greg Carlson Vague Visages Those low budgets and short running times promise a certain kind of pleasure, and Shadow in the Cloud operates in that spirit. Jul 28, 2023 Full Review Kate Boyle InSession Film The film has its issues with historical inaccuracy, a problematic writer, and a convoluted plot, but Chloë Grace Moretz makes it worth watching (especially if you like WWII plane movies). Rated: C+ Mar 8, 2023 Full Review Jeffrey Overstreet Looking Closer What makes this film unusually compelling is how Moretz brings such conviction to her performance that we want to see how she comes out of this — even as the world around her poses greater and greater threats to our suspension of disbelief.
