Two Irish carnival workers, Angus (Rufus Sewell) and Lily (Carla Gugino), operate a lackluster sideshow for a circus. All of that has the potential to change when they meet an old sailor, Mr. Woolrich (Aubrey Morris), who happens to possess a real mermaid (Rya Kihlstedt). With visions of fame and success running through his head, Angus abducts the mermaid and boards a boat to America with Lily. This is my absolute favorite movie! I've always loved mermaids, as far as mythical creatures go. I'm also a huge horror movie fan, and a avid reader of horror novels by writers such as Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Peter Straub, etc. It's 2022, now, and this is still the best, most realistic mermaid movie I've ever seen. It's a very well made and well acted movie. I read it's a remake of a 1950s classic I rented it at Hollywood Video and was pleasantly surprised at how beautiful and atmospheric the movie was yet gory and scary checking all the boxes for me. I was really shocked to see the rotten tomatoes rating for this movie. I don't understand who rates for rotten tomatoes but I constantly disagree with them. I don't even know why I come on here anymore, lol.p

Slow at times, the story isn't too remarkable but it does have a interesting premise. Overall the execution worsens it. Fun creature effects and a timely setting with a decent mood, just to name a few pros.

I think it's quite interesting to use mermaids as a topic for horror film, but it requires some better screenwriting. I liked the use of sideshow, pirates and mermaids as inspiration, it was very clever but it was a shame that the film is made with a low budget and had average acting.

Fun creature feature dealing w/ a turn of the 20th Century sideshow acquiring a real mermaid and trying to transport her across the ocean to America. Things do not go well for them. Good atmosphere and nicely done creature effects. Fun popcorn flick.

Decent start, but when the monster takes over it's 100% cliché. I mean, when you got such a frightening cute looking mermaid why substitute her with such a second-hand alien?
