Sol Glass's (Ferdinand Gottschalk) department store is struggling in the Depression, so he decides to have the store's stenographers become customer girls -- women paid to entertain important clients and close deals. One such stenographer, Florence Denny (Loretta Young), is forbidden from acting as a customer girl by her fiancé, Tommy (Regis Toomey), until he realizes they both need the extra cash for their marriage.
