Carla Hay Culture Mix Shelter in Solitude is a little uneven when it awkwardly tries to balance comedy with the drama of the main story. Good acting saves what could have been a very trite movie about an unlikely friendship between a death row prisoner and a prison guard. Oct 14, 2023 Full Review Perry Norton Film Threat This is a nice little script, and director Vibeke Muasya delivers the best of its comedy and drama well. Rated: 6/10 Oct 6, 2023 Full Review Avi Offer NYC Movie Guru A warm, tender and genuinely heartfelt story about friendship, compassion and empathy. Siobhan Fallon Hogan gives a raw, convincingly moving performance while finding the emotional truth of her role and exuding palpable charisma. Oct 5, 2023 Full Review Brian Orndorf Blu-ray.com Hogan once again greatly impresses with her depth and sensitivity, joined by a terrific cast that makes the little moments hit the hardest. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/10/23 Full Review vanessa c Great humanitarian movie! Definitely worth seeing Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/09/23 Full Review Gary G good story and acting bit kind of boring, not one I'd watch again Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/07/23 Full Review Jay I really enjoyed this one. It's not a big budget movie but the acting is great and there's a few moments that pull on your heartstrings. Solid 4 out of 5 stars. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/06/23 Full Review Sophia G I had the opportunity to watch Shelter in Solitude last night at the Sheen Center and speak to Siobhan afterwards---she is such a gem and a lovely lady to talk to. It's rare to see independent films with such depth and honesty, and this one really hits home. The film was inspired from her father, who used to tell her and her siblings stories from work, which really resonated with me; it's very much like my mum's relationship with her grandparents who would always share stories growing up---such an Irish behavior. The message of the film was incredibly powerful. I loved how the ending wasn't a typical conventional Hollywood ending, rather it was something much more real and heartfelt. It felt like real life, not a film script, which I really admired. Siobhan was absolutely hilarious in this film, and her ability to balance the comedy with the drama and raw heartbreak was absolutely perfect. Peter Macon's performance at the end too was gut-wrenching and left me speechless. Seriously. I was SOBBING. I also really appreciated how Catholicism was woven throughout the film. From the scripture readings to the statue of Mary and rosary by the bed, it felt so authentic. There's something about how the more raw, imperfect characters in the story are the ones who embrace religion that struck me as really profound---faith doesn't always come from the most polished backgrounds or places, it's the messy, real moments where it often speaks the loudest. Shelter in Solitude was a truly memorable film, and I can't wait to see more from Siobhan and the stories she has to share. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
