      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Kevin Bacon and Elizabeth McGovern struggle to sustain a spark in She's Having a Baby, a blasé adult romance that lacks the specificity and style of writer-director John Hughes' more successful forays into teenage angst.

Jeff M This is probably the least successful of the John Hughes product that came out through the 80s, which is somewhat surprising as it would seem in theory to have the most potential. It would seem that Hughes' ability to write interesting, three dimensional teenage characters stopped once they turned into adults. There is nothing fresh or original here, nothing you couldn't find in an average sitcom. Bacon does well with the material, but McGovern feels lost and unable to rise to the occasion of creating a character with any interest whatsoever. And considering the title of the movie, there is precious little dedicated to the baby - it almost seems like an afterthought. A dramatic 180 degree shift in tone at the climax of the movie feels unearned and maudlin, even though it's the only time anything close to true emotion happens. These are likable and talented actors, including Baldwin in one of his very first film roles, but they can't breathe life into characters that are more caricature than human. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review Chris V A great "becoming an adult" movie. One of John Hugh's hidden classics. This movie does not get the credit it deserves. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/29/23 Full Review peter b I really enjoyed this movie. It may not be quite the same as the other John Hughes movies... but I really enjoyed it. I felt the actors had great chemistry and there were some wonderful performances. Some of the jokes and 'daydream' sequences were maybe a little disjointed from the rest of the movie (the lawnmower dance sequence) but they still were fun and I did get some good laughs from them. I liked that the movie took its time to build the characters and help us get to know them. This is a gem of a film. Sit back and just go along for the journey.. really special film. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review keith b I remember loving this movie as a kid. John Hughes has always been one of my absolute favorite directors and I found this movie while odd at times, I also found it funny. Also the Kate Bush "Woman's Work" song was always very memorable to me. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Cute little John Hughes movie about growing up. Not one of his best or more well-known, but it still has good humor and sweet moments. I've never gotten married or expected a child, but the emotions and anxieties seem very realistic. This plays as sort of a sequel to his teenage movies, showing the life that comes after the credits roll. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review laurent b Fun to watch, and there are plenty of good actors. Plus, it says true and good things about what people think and feel when they get married etc, lot to think about for everybody Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Bob Thomas Associated Press Hughes has supplied some bright, even brilliant touches in dealing with the traditional cliches. Rated: 3/4 Apr 3, 2019 Full Review Michael Wilmington Los Angeles Times If She's Having a Baby were a funnier movie, if the fights were more cleverly written and Bacon and McGovern played them more deftly and lightly, it wouldn't have that unpleasant edge -- seesawing between romance and paranoia. Jun 4, 2014 Full Review William Thomas Empire Magazine By turns amusing and exasperating, it takes its time getting to the "Life is what you make it" point, but it's sweet. Rated: 3/5 Jun 4, 2014 Full Review Akos Peterbencze The Screen ...the reason the film's intimate and emotional ending works so well (despite a hazy and disorganized plot that didn’t necessarily lay out a plausible road to its climax convincingly) is Hughes’s contentment with his own life.
