      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Silent Hill is visually impressive, but as with many video game adaptations, it's plagued by inane dialogue, a muddled plot, and an overlong runtime.

Audience Member Over 15 years old and I never found this movie to be bad. Yes it got such negative reviews when it came out but it ended up being one of my favorite movies of 2006. The story focuses on a couple Rose and Christopher and their adoptive daughter Sharon. Sharon has been having nightmares and endless sleepwalks yelling about a place called Silent Hill. In order to get to the root of the problem Rose decides to take her to the town but on the way she almost gets into a car accident and Sharon goes missing. Rose then makes her way around Silent Hill that seems deserted and abandoned but encounters several horrific creatures and hauntings. With the help of a police officer Cybill they struggle to find Sharon while also unlocking this town's deepest, darkest secrets. This was my first introduction to Radha Mitchell, Laurie Holden, Alice Kriege, and Jodelle Ferland. Truly one of my favorite video game adaptations despite so many changes they made. The visuals are absolutely amazing nailing down the atmosphere of the haunted town, they get the camera angles, and the gore is plentiful. They used a lot of the music from the games by Akira Yamouka. Director Christopher Gans manages to bring the style and appearance to life. Plus there is the feeling of isolation and dread. Although it does suffer from inane dialogue, silly plotting, and the essence of the source material is somewhat lost in the shuffle. Sean Bean's scenes are so jarring and slow things down they could've been cut out completely. At its core though it is a story about maternal love and adoption trauma. The movie cremates the conventional adoption narrative in cinema, drawing the nightmarescape of not only forming a bond with an adopted child, but sustaining it, and with that attempts to sustain it says about the adoptive parent. Mother is god in the eyes of a child but adoptees know religion is an opiate or a way to treat emotional pain. A worthy adaptation as far as I'm concerned despite some minor issues. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Skye It's a great movie. Adaptation same as game version. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/04/24 Full Review Tyler c Growing up playing Silent hill games makes this movie have a special place in my heart. This is not a perfect movie by any means but I enjoyed this game to movie adaptation more then almost any other. Some good scares and horrific imagery and themes. I can always sit down and give this movie another watch. recommended 8/10 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review Jesse K This is an underrated masterpiece. The acting and visuals hold up even now in 2024. The atmosphere nailed the ambiance of the game and the soundtrack was amazing, even using pieces from Yamaoka himself. And the plot was serviceable. Trying to take a surreal game like silent Hill 1 (probably the most disorienting of the entire series) and translate it to film is a difficult task. I think this movie did a very good job in encapsulating many of the best parts of the game while still keeping a coherent story for those who haven't played it. I do not understand everyone saying that the third act was confusing. I find that it gave far more explanation than the game. And honestly, the story was never that important. It's supposed to leave you asking questions and wondering when it's all over. I think all the negative reviews are product of its time. In the last decade we have seen many more films that don't hold the viewers hand and tell an intentionally confusing narrative. If this film were made in 2024, I believe it would be looked on far more favorably. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/23/24 Full Review akuma 7 Love this movie and it's interesting theme being based off silent hill video games, and it's Smokey Underground fire theme, being from a real underground Coal fire that happened in Centralia, Pennsylvania in the 1960 and is still burning now to this day and expected to burn for another 200 years or more, it's not filmed there just the underground fire theme it's based off, the movie is filmed in Ontario, Canada, it's definitely better than the second move, but I still like to rewatch them both in a row a few times every year, I watched it before playing the video games but there's lots of people that give it very bad reviews cuz they want the story to be exactly as the video games are, Happens quite often when making a live action of a story to get bad reviews but personally it's one of my favorite movies. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/23/24 Full Review Lina A I don't know how these so called critics got their critics "title", but, man, are they lost not getting the plot. I have never played the games and I understood every bit of the plot. If the horror is not your genre, just be silent, as you obviously are just biased middle-aged entitled grumbler. And the one trying to compare Silent Hill with Dario Argento's movies? Wow, that was so inappropriate that the "critics police" needed to arrest him immediately. These people praised Fast and Furious 9 which was straight dumb. But, yeah Silent Hill's plot was a problem. So, the movie: in 2024 it still has much better visuals than many newly made movies claiming to be outstanding. Yes, it is a mystery until it reveals the story behind the hell. There is not a single moment which is needless - everything helps building the suspense, the terror, you even side with the evil at the end. The movie is brilliant. The sound effects are breath-taking. The dialogue may be not the brightest but, hey, it is straight to the point and anyway it is not so important in it all. And why should it be? The horror does not need words. Please see this movie. And please, please do not read the critics' reviews as the majority of them are worse written than the current one. Enjoy this one with all its rollercoaster of feelings. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com Where this movie shines is in its disturbing imagery, its very creepy visuals, and the stunning production design. Rated: B Oct 24, 2019 Full Review Brian Tallerico UGO Silent Hill starts out at point A and then goes so quickly, loudly and visually over-the-top that it flies completely off the rails into its own glorious weirdness. Rated: 2/5 Aug 25, 2006 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …Silent Hill is no masterpiece, the plotting is lopsided, the climax confusing and somewhat repellently violent in a Clive Barker way, but it’s also a strong, female-driven story with exquisite visuals and sound design… Rated: 3/5 Jun 4, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The result looks better than most based-on-a-video-game adaptations, but the storytelling is just as dim as we’ve come to expect from such material.
