samuel c As a 6-year-old I was privileged to see Walter Liberace in concert at the Masonic Temple in Rockford, Illinois. The impact of that performance explains, at least in part, my later career as a "week-end jobber." For 45 years I worked approximately 50 engagements as a pianist (I dislike the argot "gigs" for such part-time employment). I never approached the technique of Liberace, but I had a good enough ear to learn many of the songs I would hear him play on his weekly TV show in the 1950s (he ended every show with the ballad "I'll Be Seeing You"). Few musical bio-pics qualify as classic cinema, but I find this one, Lee's only feature-length film, more engaging than most. It helps make up for the brazenly exploitive movies done after Liberace's death, with Michael Douglas's TV-movie qualifying as one of the worst attempts (I can't think of any film so impoverished for low material that it would film its subject as an onlooker at a commercial peep show as evidence of his degeneracy!). Wash that trash out of your mind with "Sincerely Yours" as a start to a better, more accurate view of Liberace's appeal. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Liberace in his only film, brute than I thought. concert pianist loses his hearing. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 07/30/21 Full Review Audience Member star vehicle for mr showmanship Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member Gooey mess that tried to turn Liberace into a screen star. The fact that he has zero screen presence and the charisma of a lemming should have been obvious from the first days rushes but they plowed ahead anyway. The film does have a few saving graces, high production values, a slick look, the wonderful Lurene Tuttle in a small role which she makes the most of and besides Liberace a talented cast doing what they can with a dumb script. Of course the music is wonderful but Liberace stripped of all his flash is a black sink hole at the center of the film from which it can't recover. The tap number at the end is a horror show all its own. A stinkeroo! Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
