Critics Consensus

A well-acted if slightly formulaic story of friendship, Sitting in Bars with Cake moves between laughter and tears without succumbing to melodrama.

Robert Levin Newsday Better than it sounds, thanks to terrific performances and a perceptive screenplay. Sep 13, 2023 Full Review Kaely Monahan Arizona Republic It's refreshing to see a beautiful, character-driven story that feels small, but oh-so relatable. Rated: 4/5 Sep 13, 2023 Full Review Amy Nicholson Variety It’s lucky that A’zion, as the cancer-stricken friend, pulls our attention away from the titular plotline until we practically forget the film claims to care about baked goods. Sep 13, 2023 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) A charming, gen-z answer to Beaches (and even features Bette Midler in a small role). Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Pete Vonder Haar Houston Press The only real conflict arises from Corinne's annoyance that her friend won't stand up for herself. The two work in the same music industry talent agency, where the boss is played Bette Midler in the truest "What is she doing here?" fashion. Rated: 2.5/5 Jan 25, 2024 Full Review Shawn Edwards Fox 4 Kansas City Generix as white sheet cake, It's full of lazy rom-com vibes and turns this true story into sort of this of Gen Z beaches. Rated: 2/5 Oct 27, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Justine 3 I haven’t cried to a movie since I was like 8 years old, but when I tell you I SOBBED to this movie, I truly did. Something about it really struck a chord with me. The portrayal of the different relationships in this film and how the two main characters were able to grow from them was absolutely beautiful. I thought the acting was raw, and the cinematography was great. Overall, it was an amazing movie that I was not expecting to love as much as I did. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/06/24 Full Review Jane H You get the idea from reading the plot summary but also: Women get to struggle with their lives without men being the determining factor, all the characters are nuanced but forgivable, acting is great and Bette Midler plays a great Bette Midler role so I guess that is big up the casting director. Yes obviously it is sad but there is growth and some positivety. I think it has a much more realistic view of having cancer than I have ever seen in a movie. So some laughs some tears some highs some lows. Its a powerful woman centred film about difficult stuff and fun stuff. Totally engaging great acting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/15/23 Full Review Ashley H just beautiful. the story, the cakes, the music, beautiful. And the fact that it's based on a real story, makes it so much better than it already is. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/30/23 Full Review sylvie. b so beautifully painful. they were perfect for the roles. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/26/23 Full Review Alejandro E The story, although it is not entirely new, has something that makes it attractive even though its first 30 minutes lack rhythm. The second hour is the one that attracts the most attention and has the greatest emotional charge. Its biggest attraction is the cake parade, of course. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/13/23 Full Review Robert F Loved it! Best movie I've seen this year. Funny, smart, and heartbreaking. Great cast, script, director, etc. You don't want to miss it.
