Leslie Felperin The Hollywood Reporter Nov 26
The elliptical storytelling in Lafosse’s script arguably holds back too much information, compelling the viewer to wonder why they should invest in the characters’ fates. At least the cast are likable enough to coax empathy. Go to Full Review

A ‘slice of holiday’ film that ends up holding a mirror to life itself, its many inequities, injustices and incongruities. Go to Full Review

Amaranth B @Amaranth Dec 29 There were moments of tension that almost promised to justify the telling of this story, but they came to nothing. Some indication of why the boys' parents had split up, if not an actual showdown with the grandparents reclaiming their property, might have helped. Why some reviewers claim that the film is about "inequities and injustices" is a mystery to me. The mother is offered a stay in an expensive hotel by her new boyfriend, but turns it down. Yes, the grandparents are clearly wealthy, but the family seems far from destitute (is the father not paying maintenance for his children?) and they reoccupy the property not out of necessity, but simply because it's accessible. Why is the mother no longer welcome there? That is never explained. The cinematography with its obsessive closeups obscuring the action merely gave the impression that something had to be done to keep the audience wondering whether, in fact, there was a point to this film. See more chris B Dec 28 Possibly the most boring and inconsequential film I have ever seen. And the actors all mumble. See more Read all reviews
