      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

An uneven blend of horror and comedy that fails to satisfy on either front, Slaughterhouse Rulez aims for B-movie fun but doesn't make the grade.

Ariel B Extremely silly but exactly as it means to be. I was thoroughly entertained. Clearly pokes fun at horror movie and boarding school tropes. Michael Sheen is incredible. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/07/24 Full Review Jan V A "horror" movie that never seems to really set off. Takes ages before the evil creatures appear, and then they don't really do anything except chasing a group of very vanilla teenagers. Shaun of the Dead this ain't. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 10/12/23 Full Review David S Cliche, derivative, and targeting the low-hanging fruit of greater comedies like Animal House and American Pie wrapped in a cheap gimmicky horror flick. The producers must have offered Pegg, Frost, and Butterfield some nice money because this film is below their acting abilities and despite Pegg and Frost chewing up the scenery at every chance they get, this film is bargain basement beneath them. But, at least the gore effects look almost completely practical. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 05/12/23 Full Review Shioka O It's bad and planned. I like the casts! Some social commentary on the UK boarding school crisis. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Fun film! A veritable showing of the public boy school food chain! It has it all: copious swearing, the Draco Malfoy bully persona, sex jokes, Latin, initiation orgies, and not to mention the monsters. On the other hand, it attempts to tackle relevant social and environmental issues, and while some things are not outright stated (the queer coded character remains just that), it does a fair job of it. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member Shaun of the dead part 2. Charmless, derivative and fracking awful. Amy Nicholson FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) If I was in high school, I would have been super happy to discover this film in the video store library. Sep 30, 2019 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times A star-studded cast and a high-concept premise make promises that "Slaughterhouse Rulez" ultimately can't keep. May 17, 2019 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review It looks to me like something that lost its way in the edit... overall I think it doesn't hang together. Nov 6, 2018 Full Review Alix Turner Ready Steady Cut Posh boarding school is so short of funds the headteacher allows fracking to commence in the neighbouring wood, little knowing that the resulting tremors would release some nasty beasts from under the ground. Rated: 2/5 Feb 2, 2021 Full Review Norman Gidney HorrorBuzz The screenplay by Crispian Mills, Henry Fitzherbert, and Luke Passmore has a very difficult time keeping focus on its through-line, digressing into tangents and unfunny beats. Rated: 4 Feb 10, 2020 Full Review Joey Keogh Wicked Horror A waste of a lot of great talent, and a waste of your time, should you choose to watch it.
