Critics Consensus

Merging anarchic spirit with straightforward melodrama, SLC Punk is a hit-and-miss odyssey of youthful rebellion elevated by Matthew Lillard's dramatically potent star turn.

Anthony Lane New Yorker A messy but engaging look at the punk scene in Salt Lake City during the Reagan years; that may sound a little specialized, but how many of us knew there ever was a punk scene—or even a single punk—in the home of the Mormons? Super T An iconic masterful movie with an excellent commentary on the scene. A movie that has followed me all throughout life. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/20/24 Full Review James L Imagine being trapped in a room with the most annoying person of all-time! that's how I feel watching the endless annoying exposition of this movie! Matthew Lillard gives the MOST CRINGE performance of all time as Steveo (so lame), while the side characters are actually much more interesting. This is the worst example of punk in film history. Where's the creativity? Where's the DIY? Where's the spirit? It's a movie: SHOW US, don't tell us. I saw this when it first came out and it was terrible then, and even worse now. It's all down to poor casting of the lead and a really annoying script. There is hope tho: the sequel is much better ^__^ Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/28/24 Full Review Cody S I love this movie, love the energy and the variety of stories along the way. There are some parts that get pretty weird, but overall just a wild ride that is worth revisiting on occasion. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/12/24 Full Review Unclericos T Good cast with some good acting. Great soundtrack. Bad dialogue and storyline that goes nowhere. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/06/23 Full Review Jonathan G Very close to a perfect movie. It's unfortunate that Matthew Lillard will be remembered as shaggy from scooby doo movies when this movie is his magnum opus and his performance is utterly spellbinding. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/29/23 Full Review Lucid C One of my top 10 favorites. A must see, especially if you went through a real punk rock phase.
