Critics Consensus

Sleepless in Seattle is a cute classic with a very light touch and real chemistry between the two leads -- even when spending an entire movie apart.

Sleepless In Seattle balances romance and realism by giving its central characters two different but equally pragmatic philosophies on love. Go to Full Review

"Sleepless in Seattle" (citywide), a real charmer, is a romantic comedy about an ultimate long-distance relationship. Emphasize "romantic." Emphasize "comedy." It delivers both. Go to Full Review

Self-consciousness infects Nora Ephron's sweet but perilously thin love story, Sleepless in Seattle...such are the perils of these postmodernist times: even our love stories feed off borrowed emotion. Go to Full Review

Sleepless in Seattle is odd because there is no meet cute until the final scene. Somehow, Norah Ephron has created a world where it makes sense that two strangers are separated by 3,000 miles and still manage to fall in love. Go to Full Review

Sleepless in Seattle fully embraces romantic melodrama and Ephron cleverly exploits the insane chemistry that Hanks and Ryan share. Its greatness is undisputed and the list just wouldn’t be complete without it. Go to Full Review

Sleepless in Seattle succeeds as a glorious three-way romantic comedy between men, women and children. It's a valiant valentine to the post-nuclear family. Go to Full Review

Patrick M 02/15/2024 Great classic Rom Com, a few things didn't hold up over time, but overall enjoyable film. See more paul o @Paulo190408 Nov 17 Good, light hearted, film. See more Gareth v Jul 23 A sweet, light romantic comedy that leans heavily on charm, nostalgia, and the fantasy of unseen love. An emotionally thin movie that lacks any real spark but will be loved by fans of this genre. See more Mason M Jun 4 I like to think of myself as an enjoyer of pretty sophisticated films, but I think romantic comedies often don't get enough credit as one of the best movie genres out there. Sleepless in Seattle was a really beautiful film that I really enjoyed. I had mixed feelings about Nora Ephron from the pretty good but not all too well made film When Harry Met Sally, but this film which she both wrote and directed really proves her as quite a talented filmmaker. The settings and all of the locations in this film are amazing and very memorable, the cinematography is great at many times, it's well written. This film has a lot of strengths. The use of music in the film with both the soundtrack and the score was amazing and added a great touch of emotions to scenes. And Meg Ryan was a great lead for the film and she gave a great performance. This is an all around amazing romance, and I understand why it's such a classic. See more Maxi G May 15 A classic romantic comedy. Nostalgic. I found particularly moving the tale of a grieving father processing and working through the stages of grief after the loss of his much loved wife. Being a single parent raising his son, together wading through the grief. It was interesting the way this was depicted especially how rather than focusing on the love/ the new relationship. The story was more so about confronting the loss of his wife and him processing that and gradually opening himself up to a new love. The meet cute being at the end and the protracted somewhat arms length development of intimacy up to the point where they met. I have watched and enjoyed this movie more than once over the years. A worth while movie to see. See more David F Apr 5 With a hat tip to An Affair to Remember, this is a great romantic comedy about two people who barely know each other but fall in love based on one of them hearing the other one being interviewed on the radio. It’s also a time capsule about dating in the 90s when people had to go out of their way in all sorts of different ways to meet each other. It’s hugely implausible but wins you over with heart and with a lot of really good humorous scenes and characters. See more Read all reviews
