Critics Consensus

A slimy, B-movie homage oozing with affection for low-budget horror films, Slither is creepy and funny -- if you've got the stomach for it.

Allison Shoemaker Fox 10 Phoenix Slither is a visceral experience from the first, but as the creature grows, so does the film's daring. Aug 6, 2021 Full Review Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader Gross-out horror comedy is my least favorite genre, but this movie's so skillful I have to take my hat off to it. Oct 7, 2008 Full Review Brian Tallerico UGO Slither is over-the-top, gross, funny, bizarre and totally weird. In other words, it might be just what you're looking for this weekend. Mar 24, 2007 Full Review Joshua Polanski Boston Hassle Slither might be [James Gunn's] most blatant refusal of the action-movie trope[s]. Jul 14, 2024 Full Review Christopher Smith Bangor Daily News (Maine) As with so many zombie movies, table manners have no place here -- why should they when fresh intestines are on the menu? Gluttony, however, does bloom in Slither, and what it builds to is one savage little garden. Rated: B May 23, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review When so many horror directors end up ripping off the films they admire because they’re simply not creative, Gunn comes along and shows them all how to take inspiration, pay homage, and yet remain individual and entertaining. Chris G Gross out body horror melded with an edge of alien zombies, Gunn's debut film largely succeeds, in no short part to the exceptional casting of Rooker, Banks, and Fillion. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/01/24 Full Review Stephen H This movie is nasty and gave me nightmares as a kid. Hell yeah! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Jay H The performances and effects are excellent, but this horror/comedy is quite unpleasant, especially if you are an animal lover. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 10/08/24 Full Review Jack G The only reason I wouldn't rate it higher is the rather dull humour. There's some laughs here and there. It has some decent action sequences and the twist with the aliens was a refreshing idea. What I really liked was the practical effects, they're very well done. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/27/24 Full Review Yash B "Slither" isn't the greatest movie but I also feel like it isn't trying to be. It definitely comes off as an homage to B-grade horror movies that are over the top and fun. I do feel the movie could have been a more scary and intense experience, but it plays up the sillier elements and mostly has fun with it. I think the movie is decent enough to enjoy for what it is, but I felt like I wasn't on the edge of my seat as much as this sort of premise could have had me. Nonetheless, there were some laughs, some crazy moments, and a mostly passable ride that fans of horror comedies should appreciate. Overall, I admire what James Gunn was trying to do here and while it isn't my personal favorite, I think it is decent and enjoyable enough.
