Audience Member The world of relentless commerce threatens to crush the little guys running the offbeat bookstores in places like Amsterdam, but Burt is holding out -- barely. He's in limbo. What would he do without his bookstore? He feels like Hank Quinlan in TOUCH OF EVIL -- his future is all used up. Or is it? He runs his bookstore in a lackadaisical way and holds off on selling the store to a smarmy but funny Dutch businessman who wants to turn the building where the bookstore is located into a sex emporium. A young woman appears and they become friends... By chance she's the daughter of the great love of his life who he had to leave behind in Morocco because, well, she was married... He went on to become a poet in Amsterdam and bookstore owner who has a standing once-a-week session with a hooker with a heart of gold, but he is ultimately alone. Julie Christie and Reynolds give appealing performances. A character of equal interest is Christie's daughter, a young woman who, in Amsterdam, explores the use of self-portraits as art. The film has the feel of 20th-century bohemianism.... when Beats and hippies wandered the world and ended up creating small counter-culture refuges here and there -- or setting in places that were amenable to their lifestyles -- New Orleans, San Francisco, Key West, Amsterdam.... The film is enjoyable as an evocation of that world. And the performances are enjoyable. The film is mildly funny and touching. In contrast, a film about a drifter and bohemian who falls for a young woman and his life unravels, Last Tango in Paris, goes to a much darker place, and is, in some ways a masterpiece. But this is enjoyable as a skewed, boho romantic comedy. Burt Reynolds does a better job than I would have thought. Nice to see Julie Chritie, who does fine as usual. The story is good. It's filming is so-so, the continuity not always good. There are a few slow stretches. The location filming in Amsterdam is a huge plus. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member dearly horrific movie.. in the words of another "Suffice it to say that in the grand scheme of cinema, it's crap. However, as a no brainier sentimental watch for the zoning sofa spud, it squeaks by as nominal fluff. Recommended for fans of the players or anyone who can't find anything better among the channels."
