Gabriel S Culture is an interesting piece of social science. When preparing to review this movie, I found out that Laddaland got a Best Picture award in Thailand's National Film Association Award. That in itself is funny as I think this movie is a not-recommended piece. I will explain. If you look at the cover of Laddaland, it might confuse you. The happy family vibes imply a comedic family drama, but, slightly off the corner, an eerie entity sits on the entry sign for Laddaland, a suburban gated community for medium-high class people, promising piece and rest, quality of life. So what is this movie really about? Well, Laddaland tells the story of the family Thee, Parn, and children Nan and Nat. Thee risked high to get to Laddaland with the promise of a better life, something Nan despises as her life abruptly changed. With high stakes, things start going south when Thee sees himself struggling financially, and, to make matters worse, Nan claims she saw a ghost. Laddaland mixes family drama with horror and the two don't blend so well. You can clearly see the distinction between one genre over the other as the scenes go by, giving the impression that you are watching two different movies. The family drama is forced: Nan is brat for no special reason other than just being that. Then you get the generic family dynamics: Thee is caring but he is trying to be firmer as a father, sometimes too much; Parn is the middleman trying to cool down the situation, usually tending towards supporting Nan rather than Thee, so Thee feels everyone is against him — except for Nat that is just the 6 year old that behaves like 3. The other side of the coin is the horror aspect. Thailand horror is superb and, as expected, the horror scenes are suspenseful and the entity is their average haunting being, scary stuff. But then the story scalates a lot and you are like what the hell is going on? This escalation raises a lot of unanswered questions that ultimately leads to a predictable but emotional ending. To wrap the cake, a closure segment that tries to pack a punch but is out of tune with everything that has happened, sad and just downright depressing. Laddaland misses the point. It is like Director Sophon Sakdaphisit couldn't decide if he wanted to make a family drama or a horror piece, so he made both and they mix like water and oil. A guitar with a couple of strings out of tune played by a good guitarrist. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/31/25 Full Review g j An effective and hard-hitting the Shining-type supernatural horror set in suburban Chiang Mai. Much more emotionally authentic than almost any US haunted house movie of the past twenty years. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/19/25 Full Review Audience Member Scary and So.....sad Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member I watched the english dubbed version (not by choice). Not a good movie. Seems very amateurish. From the attempted scares to some weird camera angles at the worst possible moments. Plus the characters are all very unlikable. It has a decent ending but not good enough to salvage an otherwise bad/ok movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/15/23 Full Review Audience Member I'm fairly certain this is the first Thai film I've seen and based on this experience, I'll be watching more. This is something I actually said while watching it at home: "I'll be ok as long as he doesn't ____ or _____. Phew! Wait....Oh no! ........ Oh, good. Phew. Wait. NO NO NO!!!" Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Like so many Asian ghost stories before it, it has good scares, and a slow build that actually leads into a none conventional ending. It's certainly worth a viewing if your into the genre. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
