Critics Consensus

Solace boasts a talented cast and a somewhat intriguing premise, but they're outweighed by a plodding story that teeters between tired clichés and ludicrous twists.

Tomris Laffly New York Magazine/Vulture Solace isn't a Silence of the Lambs sequel in which Hopkins gets to reprise the role of Hannibal Lecter. But he comes pretty damn close in this ludicrous murder mystery, which is stuck somewhere between a bad season of Dexter and a dated crime flick. Jan 4, 2017 Full Review Glenn Kenny RogerEbert.com The directorial pyrotechnics keep Solace from "dragging" in a narrative sense; the very real boredom it nonetheless elicits is more existential. Rated: 1.5/4 Dec 16, 2016 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times Staggeringly silly and visually disordered, this unfortunate misfire has been kicking around Europe and elsewhere for a couple of years under different titles, and it's easy to see why. Dec 15, 2016 Full Review Allen Adams The Maine Edge Solace, a film that had the foundation in place to be an OK movie only to squander it all on recycled tropes and strained dialogue and clichéd twists. Rated: 0/5 Feb 13, 2019 Full Review Sean Mulvihill FanboyNation.com Solace will certainly come and go from the pop culture conversation in the blink of an eye. Rated: 1.5/5 Nov 1, 2018 Full Review Alison Rowat The Herald (Scotland) But then nobody brings a touch of class to nonsense quite like Hopkins, an actor who can make the most bizarre of lines seem plausible. Matthew S Its a watchable film but just not very engaging. Hopkins spends the whole film with a grim look on his face recounting deeply hurtful personal insights into people because apparently he knows such things.. The actual plot is shallow and predictable. Abbie Cornish is hard to watch.. Farrell is barely in it. Forgettable Rated 2 out of 5 stars 10/31/24 Full Review Basil R Worth a watch. Really felt like there were a lot of missed opportunities. The beginning kind of throws you into a story that has already begun, with little to no background, which I guess was the point. Kind of had a Seven feel to it, but the storyline disappointed a bit. It was slow at parts, and then it sped through other parts which should have been more at the forefront. The ending for me was a little clumsy and predictable, after all Clancy had the ability to run through all the scenarios from beginning to end. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/25/24 Full Review Dave V This isn't the greatest movie, but it is interesting and intriguing. It is definitely worth a watch. There is good suspense and surprises. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/01/24 Full Review Ari V Way too many cheap tv movie tropes. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 06/25/24 Full Review Dylan S Not sure what everyones issue with this movie is. It is by no means perfect but it is absolutely entertaining. There is some exposition dumping at the beginning at that is annoying because it is clear characters are only given certain dialogue to give the viewer background info which is not good writing but beyond that, I had a good time. I dont need a film to do my taxes and raise my kids, just to entertain me for the duration of run time, and in that Solace succeeds. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/10/24 Full Review LolSniper 1 Very smart and intriguing plot and great character embodiment played by the exceptional Anthony Hopkins Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/04/24 Full Review Read all reviews
