What to Know

Critics Consensus

Solace boasts a talented cast and a somewhat intriguing premise, but they're outweighed by a plodding story that teeters between tired clichés and ludicrous twists.

Solace isn't a Silence of the Lambs sequel in which Hopkins gets to reprise the role of Hannibal Lecter. But he comes pretty damn close in this ludicrous murder mystery, which is stuck somewhere between a bad season of Dexter and a dated crime flick. Go to Full Review

The directorial pyrotechnics keep Solace from "dragging" in a narrative sense; the very real boredom it nonetheless elicits is more existential. Go to Full Review
Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times 12/15/2016
Staggeringly silly and visually disordered, this unfortunate misfire has been kicking around Europe and elsewhere for a couple of years under different titles, and it's easy to see why. Go to Full Review

Solace, a film that had the foundation in place to be an OK movie only to squander it all on recycled tropes and strained dialogue and clichéd twists. Go to Full Review

Solace will certainly come and go from the pop culture conversation in the blink of an eye. Go to Full Review

But then nobody brings a touch of class to nonsense quite like Hopkins, an actor who can make the most bizarre of lines seem plausible. Go to Full Review

Kashgar A Aug 7 Not perhaps as bad as the critics make out. Strangely dated for a movie that was released in 2015. Strangely paced too…once the killer and his motive are revealed, the rest of the movie is rushed and fumbled. I’ll leave it at that. But it’s not the worst movie you’ll ever see and it’s always good to see such strong actors working together onscreen. See more T O Jun 26 Absolutely entertaining, what movies should all be about. I'm not a film student, I only watch to escape from... I don't care about all the technicals, I leave those to the pro's. If you haven't seen it, I thoroughly recommend it. See more Michael G Jun 8 Its a very original plot, well acted. I loved it. See more Lachlan M May 13 This movie should be shown in film schools as an example of how to make a terrible film with a star cast. The writing, directing, acting and script was subpar and investors would have been disappointed in their return on investment. Anthony Hopkins playing a hitman boss with dark sunglasses trying to be imposing failed to make impact. The clumsy film editing and interaction between actors was almost laughable. See more Mary Ann F Apr 25 I rarely, if ever, give a one-star rating, but twenty minutes in, I can't stand another second. I'm not sure what's worse...the hackneyed, cornball dialogue or the amateurish filmmaking. It's all clichés and tropes, with that jumpy hip camerawork that was trendy on cop shows for about a minute. The premise of the film is decent, and the cast couldn't be better, but as the film went on, I began to feel bad for these talented actors, almost embarrassed. Dare I say it, but certain moments made me actually cringe. I'm done...signing off. See more Mario V Apr 21 Great movie, good acting & good plot See more Read all reviews
