jerry m I've been a sci Fi buff all my life. I made the mistake of thinking after Star Wars came out there would be a golden age of great science fiction movies following it. Boy was I wrong. Quantity does not equal quality the old saying goes. Of the tons of movies that have come out since Star Wars only a handful have been any good (including Star Wars flicks). So I have to decide what belongs in the good as compared to the good of kind. Solar Crisis falls in the category of good for a low budget, cheaply made, experimental etc. etc. The plot revolves around a mission to the Sun to stop a major solar flare from destroying the Earth. The film was direct to DVD. I found it interesting in the store so I bought it. I love Charlton Heston; who is very good in this. The cast is generally good and the special effects are decent. What caught my eye was the spaceship used to fly into the Sun bared a striking resemblance to the spaceship from Planet of the Apes. So we had Chuck Heston and the Icarus in the same picture. How bad can it be? The reason I'm reviewing the movie now is because I came across the original Japanese version of the film. This wasn't shown in the US. In fact the producers edited it and re shot before releasing it Straight to DVD. That's where I saw it 30 years ago. The director hated the changes and removed his name from it. Anyway I was curious to see if the other version was better than the English version. Well it was just as bad. It did go deeper into the subplot taking place on the Earth and the characters explaining the background. The US version is more streamlined and has nude scenes of the beautiful Annabel Schofield. Not that I noticed. The final voyage into the Sun on board the Icarus looking ship is breathtaking and the movie has enough entertaining action to satisfy a Science Fiction Week on the 4:30 movies alum on his old age. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/18 Full Review Audience Member ZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Crisis would be an understatement as the sun threatens to fry most of life on earth while a corporation looks to take advantage of the situation by buying the planet while its perceived value is at the point of maximum pessimism. Sci-fi effort littered with familiar faces. Plot was a bit confusing to follow at times, probably has one too many plotlines for its own good. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Solar Crisis has all the ingredients of a great film, big budget, A list stars and superb special effects. Unfortunately it all falls flat into a fetid stew of bad writing, poor pacing and a sub plot that really has nothing to do with nor any real impact on the main plot. The premise is silly, a massive solar flare is going to burn the Earth so a team of scientists with an anti-matter bomb are going to deflect it, while on earth a tycoon uses the crisis to buy up everything on earth while at the same time sabotages the plan to save the planet. One has to wonder how a tycoon will benefit when 50% to 90% of the world is dead. It would have made more sense if there was a chance the bomb would have had an adverse impact on the sun making the crisis worth, at least Peter Boyle's character would have had motivation that made sense. If you're a fan of Heston, Boyle, Palance, or Matheson it may be worth watching just to have a complete view of their filmography, otherwise there's no real reason to view this film. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member An impending solar flare threatens devastation on planet Earth. A space mission is dispatched to avert the crisis but is sabotaged by a diabolical corporation. Good visual effects mark this sci-fi entry with a big budget of $55 million but yet only managed a limited theatrical release. Shareholders of the IXL Corporation--if they survive the solar flare--can look forward to some stock appreciation and maybe even a dividend.
