Wayne K Oct 10 It’s often the case that a certain film takes an idea and makes it work big time, but the idea itself had already been done years before. We’re all familiar with the Final Destination franchise, but Sole Survivor did the whole ‘Plane crash survivor suffering survivor guilt and anticipating their own doom.’ It starts off promisingly, seeming like its going to explore her mental state and the inherent tragedy of knowing that escaping death was a fluke and its only a matter of time before it catches up with you. But for some reason the film pivots about halfway through and devolves into a not especially compelling zombie slasher flick. I’m guessing the zombies are mean to represent something in her psyche, but it’s so random and poorly defined that it just bogs the film down. What could have been a fascinating psychological examination instead becomes a trite 80s slasher, and a waste of 85 minutes. Anita Skinner plays Denise, the recent survivor of a terrible plane crash who's starting to believe that death isn't finished with her. One can see elements of this in the Final Destination series, but Sole Survivor's trying to play a different, slightly more mature game, all the while giving us a very interesting take in the zombie subgenre. Skinner, who looks a good deal like Chloe Sevingy, happens to be a great heroine and the mood and atmosphere are so thick, you could cut them with a knife. Just wait until the horrifyingly downbeat and haunting ending. This one's a real lost classic. Very much the inspiration for the movie It Follows as well as providing the original concept of the Final Destination franchise. See more 01/28/2014 Watchable film about the (duh) sole survivor of a plane crash who begins to see strange apparitions around her in the days following the accident.
