David Mermelstein Wall Street Journal A combination of pure documentary and improvisation, the film lacks a conventional plot but offers instead many gripping scenes. Oct 1, 2020 Full Review Richard Brody New Yorker Hondo's passionate, wide-ranging voice-over commentary, addressing the hero in the second person, blends confession and observation, aspiration and despair, societal and personal conflicts. Jan 22, 2018 Full Review Carson Timar ButteredPopcorn Nearly every piece of the film truly feels inspired and where sure there is the occasional scene that feels a bit too on the nose, that is far from enough to truly hurt this powerful piece of cinema. Audience Member Both on-the-nose and abstract, filmmaker Med Hondo's Soleil Ô (Oh, Sun) operates in a kind of First World no man's land; a place where the city at large looks upon those it considers "others" with polite distain. For most of Hondo's Paris, acceptance of darker-skinned immigrants extends only in theory. Our able-bodied and eager-to-work West African protagonist (Robert Liensol) spends much time immediately being refused employment, then wandering the streets ruminating on why.
