Audience Member Stockholm attorney Rebecka Martinsson (Izabella Scorupco) receives a call from a childhood friend, telling her that her brother has been murdered inside a church in the village of Kurravaara outside Kiruna. Martinsson returns to her home town in Kiruna and gets involved in the search for the killer... "Solstorm", based on the novel written by author Åsa Larsson, is a pretty wobbly Swedish crimedrama that doesn´t really make sense storywise. Wobbly direction, wobbly acting and a wobbly production that looks amateurish despite an A-list ensemble. Lovely Izabella Scorupco is the only highlight in this weak Swedish film. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/21/23 Full Review Audience Member A Swedish Stepford Wives about an outcast trying to defend her sister-in-law in a community of religious fanatics. Scary. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Very good Swedish thriller! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Quite a few nice touches, but all in all not very engaging. Pretty average, really. Besides, the acting is as cold as the locations. In other words, it's not all bad, but ... meh. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/23 Full Review Audience Member Very good Swedish thriller! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member Engaging thriller that follows a strict path. Like so many thrillers, this film has a lot to sort out. There are relationships to develop, a character to moce from point A to point B, and twists and turns. Scorupco returns to her home town after an old flame is found murdered and her best friend is the prime suspect. The film takes on religion as its main adversary. The victim was a preacher that made millions for the church. We see a close-knit community wanting to keep things simple. No one's to be trusted. The films succeeds in offering a finale that causes you to question the final actions of individual characters. The film has some gorgeous landscapes that it explores. The ice, the snow, the northern lights. All this is captured and creates a cold, isolated, but hypnotic atmosphere. It's a wonderful ending, but the journey there was so generic, it's impossible to rate it any higher. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
