      Critics Consensus

While it might have been more satisfying with a sharper focus, Somebody I Used to Know is a funny, uniquely nuanced rom-com with some interesting things to say.

Mark B This is just a good story with good characters. It is nice to just have a movie that entertains all movies do not need to break new ground. I really enjoyed this. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/02/24 Full Review Bea W Ally and Cassidy should have ended up together. It would have been far more interesting. Didn't finish because it started getting boring. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/24 Full Review Jason M I may be a sucker, but I've always enjoyed cheesy romantic flicks like this. So sue me, I'm probably the most nostalgic dude you'll ever meet! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/17/24 Full Review Kyle M Quirky and understanding though misguided formulaically, this husband-wife-touched, characteristically realistic endeavor is a proudful creation balancing between coerced developments, charismatic comedy and genuine nuances to boot. (B) Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/14/24 Full Review Audience Member Written by both Dave Franco and Alison Brie who also co-stars Sean and Ally used to be an item Ally's show unfortunately gets cancelled and she's forced to go back to where she came from When she comes back home she reminisces with Sean and starts to question everything about her life Things only become more confusing when she learns Sean is getting married to Cassidy, who reminds her of the person she used to be He didn't bother to tell her so now Ally is feeling a lot of mixed emotions She's also hired to film the wedding but can she keep a straight face? Kiersey Clemons I actually ended up liking so much as Cassidy not being the typical bully bride to knock down Ally Allison Brie has enough charm and vulnerability to see that she's someone who misses the spark and inspiration And after talking with Cassidy she realizes falling back in love maybe isn't the answer to everything since she's lived her life on a shelf painting it as a pretty picture to cover up her sadness This thankfully doesn't take the typical route you'd expect even though it could've been sharper in spots We can follow our hearts not caring what the outcome is, we can't live a live being closed off, no dream or passion is worth giving up, sometimes it takes a long time to be just ourselves Director Dave Franco makes a refreshing romantic drama that's uniquely nuanced with lots to say Alison Brie plays the lead that's allowed to be imperfect and that is always welcomed for these kinds of stories of modern love Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/24 Full Review James D This was a happy surprise that I stumbled upon. Didn't know anything about it, and I'm now a huge fan of Kiersey Clemons Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/29/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Nic Autostraddle Somebody I Used to Know was a fine departure from the typical movies that come out every year around Valentine’s Day. [Full review in Spanish] Feb 27, 2023 Full Review Manuel Betancourt AV Club If nothing else, Somebody I Used To Know is a welcome reminder that [Alison] Brie remains one of our most undersung performers. Feb 24, 2023 Full Review Nina Metz Chicago Tribune How the story resolves itself is one of the more inspired and thoughtful narrative gambits in recent memory, landing on a hard-won emotional maturity. Rated: 3.5/4 Feb 21, 2023 Full Review Maxance Vincent InSession Film Moments of heart and genuine emotion immediately hampered by humor involving sensitive bodily parts (or fluids). If you want to make a heartfelt rom-com, stuff like this needs to be on the cutting room floor. Rated: D+ Mar 6, 2024 Full Review Rachel Wagner Rachel's Reviews (YouTube) Kept reminding me of better movies I wish I was watching Feb 28, 2024 Full Review Nuha Hassan Nuha Hassan Somebody I Used to Know is not a movie anyone would want to root for the protagonist — except maybe when it’s about finding new creativity and getting a second chance.
