Michael Atkinson Village Voice Joseph L. Mankiewicz's nervous nightmare (made in his first year of directing) isn't an all-hallowed member of the noir canon -- it's fairly slick, and Mankiewicz has little or no existentialist cred. But it sings the school's black-hearted lament. Oct 23, 2007 Full Review Tom Milne Time Out Out of this familiar premise, Mankiewicz has fashioned a classic film noir. acsdoug D The movie starts out with a good plot, but my interest in the mystery started to wane about halfway through. Tip o' the hat to Nancy Guild: she does what could be the worst fake piano playing in cinematic history. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/25/24 Full Review Andrew S I'm surprised to see a number of negative reviews here of the film. It's a favorite of mine. Though the plot is somewhat conveluted and a bit hard to follow, the very enjoyable performances and very well written, memorably witty dialog captivate me. Almost all of the actors do an excellent job, including Fritz Kortner, Richard Conte, Lloyd Nolan, John Hodiak, Josephine Hutchenson. Nancy Guild is a bit bland, and I can imagine other actresses being more interesting and magnetic in her part, but Guild is appealing in a girl-nextdoor way, and the witty dialog she's given helps. I enjoy the actress playing Phyllis, never seen her in anything else; she's doesn't demonstrate much in the way of acting chops, but she's so icely sexy, and again is given witty lines that make her memorable. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/18/23 Full Review Jerald G Plenty of loose ends and strange occurrences that make no logical sense. Why would someone write a letter to himself about a bank account for instance? Still, an enjoyable movie. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/16/23 Full Review Bill B Slow paced, talky, early noir with Hodiak trying to overcome amnesia. Some very good moments and dialogue, and some hokey moments as well. Richard Conte is effective in his supporting role. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/23/23 Full Review Daniel S If this movie were a meal, I would say John Hodiak doesn't cut it, there is too much corn, and not enough meat. The acting drags a potentially compelling plot down and it doesn't recover. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Ken R I could not recall hearing of this movie before buying the DVD - its mysterious story and strong cast made me curious and I'm pleased to have caught up with it. It's good looking Noir with deep shadowy situations and some enigmatic dialogue leading us on a journey of discovery – the discovery of the lead characters forgotten past - a past that tends to play out none too well. The more we learn, the murkier a picture emerges of this haunted fellow's earlier life. So bad are his findings even he can't like himself. A string of assorted people helps open up the trail of shady deals, double-crosses and murder, which litter past indiscretions till the final resolution. While the chosen last scene may not have been the best to end on, putting all the missing pieces together adds up to a lot of stylish entertainment. This nicely produced Fox movie signalled what we might expect to follow this early directorial effort, of noted writer, Joseph Mankiewicz in years to follow – it's also an interesting entry in the short life and career of John Hodiak. The Fox classic DVD offers first-class quality to make the experience worthwhile. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/12/20 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
