Trevor Johnston Time Out This rather mushy combination of animation and live-action remains one of Disney's most controversial efforts. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Bosley Crowther New York Times Apparently the Disney wonder-workers are just a lot of conventional hacks when it comes to telling a story with actors instead of cartoons. Rated: 2/5 Mar 25, 2006 Full Review Dave Kehr Chicago Reader Better save this for nostalgia only -- kids won't be missing anything if they never encounter this relic. Sep 10, 2003 Full Review Kevin Carr Fat Guys at the Movies Full of Disney charm – but sadly weighted down with problematic racial stereotypes and tropes – it serves more as a look at Disney history than the family film it was meant to be. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 22, 2023 Full Review Jas Keimig The Stranger (Seattle, WA) Insidiously racist, pulling from minstrelsy and depicting recently freed Black slaves as kindly old Magical Negroes. I got the shivers watching the film... Dec 9, 2021 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Nothing about the film is particularly famous (save for the often debated subject matter), though the unforgettable song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" has miraculously survived. Marie Z Pure genius. Artistic direction is absolutely beautiful from beginning to end. You move through the art as it takes you back in time. The moral compass of the film is the older gentleman. It is a lovely tale with a heartwarming storyline. A must for all Disney fans. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/03/24 Full Review Dustin R A timeless classic with wonderful music and animation! A true joy for anyone who loves classic Disney! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review FLASHAHOLIC UK G Absolute masterpiece, memorable songs and larger than life characters! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/17/24 Full Review Cameron C Racist…………………………,,.,.. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/31/23 Full Review TheGoatley1 This is a classis. Great music and neat stories. The banning of the movie is ridiculous. One can enjoy it within it's context. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/15/23 Full Review Dale R It is difficult for me to rate this movie, the one above is a placeholder. I saw this movie online via a bootleg version, as that is the only way to see it in the United States at the moment. Is it as racist as people say? Yes. The use of black vernacular, inaccurate depictions of race relations in the post Civil War south, the use of a ‘tar-baby' in an animated sequence are all enough to condemn this movie as a racist product of its time. Should it be released on digital download or blu-ray? Yes. With a proper prologue explaining all the racist qualities and why they were used in this movie. Maybe even producing a short put into the extras that explains things for today's audience. This could be a great educational tool used against racism instead of hiding it like it never existed. James Baskett, who plays the lead, did a great job with what he was given (racist or not) and his performance received an honorary Academy Award. Plus "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" is one of the best Disney songs ever and also received an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The animated sequences are well done and the gang from the Br'er patch are great characters that remind me a lot of the Looney Tunes gang.
