Audience Member I really wanted to like this. I love foreign "slice of life" movies which give me access to places I will never see in real life--in this case Iran. The film gave plenty of insight into that world: apartments, a mental hospital, police stations...but the acting was flat out terrible. Huge eye-rolls, throwing of hands in the air, exaggerated gestures. The subtitles also seemed substandard. Any reference to relative mental health was translated as "I am fine, you are fine, are you feeling fine?" All references to madness, neurosis, the institution, were translated as "nuts, and the nuthouse." The main characters were annoying, seemed more irritable than mentally ill, and were redeemed only by their affection for children. The busybody neighbors were also more annoying than anything else. The most sympathetic characters were the rather ineffectual, but even-handed policemen! The score was also interesting...and annoying! Loud, dramatic, foreboding noises signalling most unsubtly that what had just transpired was significant. I was a little intrigued, but a lot annoyed!
