Whether it’s scaled-down fight scenes, limited locations, or visual effects that don’t quite land, the budget usually becomes impossible to ignore. Spades, however, is one of those rare exceptions. Written and directed by Johnny Yong Bosch, this neo-noir crime thriller carries itself with the confidence and polish of a much larger production. From its opening moments, the film establishes a professional standard that never really wavers. Ultimately, Spades succeeds by combining polished action filmmaking with emotionally grounded characters. While the central crime narrative follows a familiar formula, the film more than compensates through its excellent fight choreography, strong performances, and impressive technical execution. See more Noriko S @NSakaida Jul 22 I went in expecting very little and walked away a big fan. Maybe it was the limited budget, but Spades grabbed me right away. The performances felt genuine, the story kept me invested, and the ending delivered. It never tried to be something it wasn't. It just focused on telling a compelling story, and it worked.
