G M Speed (1994) remains an absolute thrill ride even 30 years later, proving that great action filmmaking never goes out of style. The lack of CGI gives the movie a grounded, authentic intensity—every explosion, crash, and stunt feels raw and real, making the stakes hit even harder. Keanu Reeves brings a steady, determined energy to his role, while Jeff Daniels adds heart and humor, and together they form a dynamic duo that deserved more screen time in future films. The pacing is relentless, keeping you on edge from the first scene to the final showdown. Whether you’re revisiting it or watching for the first time, Speed holds up as a masterclass in tension, thrills, and old-school action, and still earns its place as one of the genre’s all-time greats. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Cork B Yeah Speed is a little rough around the edges. Keanu never REALLY learned how to act, although it doesn't matter a ton here. Some of the effects are a bit dated, and the story is WAY over the top. That all said, all the stupid stuff like the bus jump was done in the service of suspense - what was going to happen to the bus next? We won't bother with backstory - we know the bomber is bad because he is played by Dennis Hopper - QED. The movie hops along at just the right pace to keep the audience enthralled, never slowing for feelings or exposition. With enough humor thrown it at the right spots to relieve the tension, just to jack it back up again. Best bus movie ever. And yes, that includes The Big Bus. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review Scott P This is my favorite action movie of all time and it's not to over the top and doesn't try to hard, it's just plain old fun, entertaining as hell, and c'mon, if a movie can get you to care about a bunch of people on a bus, it works. Plus this is the movie that put Keanu Reeves on the map as a leading man in action movies. The score is amazing as well. If you've never seen it watch it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review Esra Y Solid action movie. Does not step on the brakes once. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/20/25 Full Review Autumn M Speed is a taut action movie that does not slow down for a millisecond. Don't let the 2 hour runtime scare you, the frantic pace of the story matches the sheer terror of the hostages perfectly. Keanu Reeves was early in his career, so his acting is not the best, but Sandra Bullock is stellar in this early role. Recommended. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/15/25 Full Review Benjamin G There are action movies and then there are action movies, “Speed” is the latter. Rarely does its scenes let off the gas leading into one fiasco after the other, barely giving the audience time to take its eyes off the road. Speed is a classic. Shot in Hollywood, presenting Sandra Bullock to the world, with a guy named Jack Travern to save the day. It even features the original Karen of cinema (Beth Grant) before social media coined the term. The acting, stunts, and effects are realistic (minus the iconic bus jumping scene) demonstrating noticeable improvements in filmmaking that is oftentimes stark between pre- and post-90s cinema. While watching the movie, I was trying to figure out which film captures peak-Keanu Reeves: I figure most would argue that honor goes to “The Matrix” such as myself, “Point Break” to a refined few, and maybe even his more recent “John Wick” series considering its success. I’ve always thought that “Speed” is when Keanu physically looked his best and was somewhat an inspiration growing up. “Speed” was the first major blockbuster action movie I watched in theaters. If I had to critique it, I suppose they could have sped up the intro credits, which has got to be one of the slowest credit reels of all time before a movie starts, which is ironic considering how fast the movie’s pace is throughout the film. Some movies don’t age well but “Speed” maintains velocity even 30 years after its release. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/25 Full Review Read all reviews
