      Critics Consensus

A fairly flat telling of a true story that was far more colorful and entertaining in real life, Spinning Gold is destined for the cutout bin.

Jo & Co Jo and I weren't expecting great things from this movie after reading the reviews. However, we have both often disagreed with most of them and there was nothing else on at our local cinema so we sat down and watched "Spinning Gold" with not much expectations. It was billed as the "life and career of record producer and Casablanca Records founder Neil Bogart, who was credited with discovering many iconic musical acts such as Donna Summer, KISS, Village People and signing and pushing acts including Gladys Knight and the Pips, the Isley Brothers, and Parliament to greater heights" - Wikipedia. That seemed to us more positive so we sat down with THREE other patrons in the 250 plus auditorium that did not swell in numbers during the 137 minutes running time. We had to agree that the first hour of the movie was hard going. Flat is the nicest adjective I can give it. However it did improve in a BIG way in the second plus hour. Whilst I can understand some reviewers felt Jeremy Jordan in the central player, Neil Bogart ,was overacting but I understand that is exactly as he was in real life. He boasted he changed his name continually and never seemed worried he was 6 million dollars in deb! However, he persevered and as most of us would have given up he never-the-less carried on with energy that even made his wife and friends, relations, etc to believe in him. It came as a shock to me that he died very young from cancer and during the end credits they showed a real interview he gave just before he shockingly died. The last hour and a half flew by and there was enough music in it to really entertain us - how could you not move your body to Donna Summer!. So, do stick with it - it is well worth it. Apr 3, 2023 Full Review Alejandro Lingenti La Nación (Argentina) More than a biopic, Spinning Gold is an unabashed homage to Neil Bogart... [Full review in Spanish] Rated: 2/5 Jun 2, 2023 Full Review Ezequiel Boetti Otroscines.com Spinning Gold doesn't work as a fable about the pursuit of the American dream but as a superficial, schematic approach to an era with an artistic effervescence that still impresses us today.
