Harvard senior Sam Thatcher (Lew Ayres) and his best friend and roommate, known as The Lippencott (Burgess Meredith), plan to go to Russia after graduation, a decision Sam has kept from his girlfriend, Alex Benson (Maureen O'Sullivan). Alex, at a neighboring women's college, invites Sam to a dance after The Lippencott's girlfriend reveals the boys' plans. A crisis develops when the boys find out the only ship to Russia departs two weeks before graduation -- and the night before the dance.
