These things are really, really not for me. I found a couple of laughs in Statham's role but beyond that Spy did nothing for me. I know folks who do enjoy this, and other Feig/McCarthy films, but I genuinely do not understand the appeal, maybe Spy is better than the others, maybe not, but it did absolutely nothing to turn me around on these collabs.

Like Bridesmaids and The Heat before it, Spy masquerades as a crude and brash comedy but underneath is something else entirely. For one, the performances are unmissable particularly and obviously shining forthright from Melissa McCarthy in the leading role, who's naturalness and likeability - even with her foul mouth and gracelessness - are constantly on show. She's so talented that her performance mainly carries the film, and if it weren't for then it would run at risk of really not working. Rose Byrne and Jason Statham are also fantastic in supporting roles and not only is the film hilarious, it's also paced with brilliant combat and action scenes that are genre-worthy at best and are what should really be expected from a film called Spy.

Finally, an American action/comedy that gets the tone just about right, not too serious and not too silly (well, almost.) Melissa McCarthy shows she can pull her weight in a lead role, and speaking of which what a relief that we are spared from enduring a parade of fat jokes - imagine that, you can still be funny without taking cheap shots! Hats off to Paul Feig! Rated a hard 'R' for language, would be a close call who has the highest number of fucks:wordcount ratio, McCarthy or Rose Byrne in a cracking portrayal as the Eva Green-like evil uberbitch. Not to be outdone either in the expletive arena is Jason Statham, hilariously lampooning his own action hero persona as a spy who has killed a thousand enemies, lost and re-attached several of his own limbs, and died several times. There are a few drawbacks, particularly how McCarthy is established as a shy presence who can be overwhelmed by a situation, but almost immediately transforms into a deadly weapon more skilled than dozens of highly paid and experienced killers even though her last taste of field training was 10 years ago. The number of laughs I got allowed me to ignore such missteps, resulting in a jolly romp superior to the passable but inferior "Get Smart" I watched earlier this year.

This is a great comedy movie with a lot of laughs and is also an enjoyable action flick. Despite its violent and sometimes offensive humor, or even because of it. Spy is a great success.
