Critics Consensus

Leslie Nielsen's comic gifts are undisputed, but Spy Hard's lazy script and slapdash direction fail to take advantage of them.

Desmond Ryan Philadelphia Inquirer The jokes come in sporadic volleys rather than the steady machine-gun pace of The Naked Gun and Airplane!, and, with a few exceptions, they are less truly aimed. Rated: 2/5 Jun 4, 2013 Full Review John Petrakis Chicago Tribune As funny as Nielsen can be, like all comic actors he still needs the quick-thinking jokes and zingy one-liners to be genuinely funny. Rated: 1.5/4 Jun 4, 2013 Full Review Mal Vincent The Virginian-Pilot Less raunchy than the other Nielsen films, the material isn't enough to sustain its 80 minutes but it has its moments. henrik m Leslie Nielsen’s comedic brilliance shines through in Spy Hard yet again. The man had an unparalleled gift for deadpan humor, and in this movie, it’s evident in every frame. His ability to deliver the most ridiculous lines with complete sincerity is what makes him a comedic legend. While others might play up their absurdity, Nielsen’s genius was in his restraint—he played each joke straight, giving it a surreal charm that no one could replicate. Every physical gag, every pun, and every improbable scenario is elevated by Nielsen’s perfect timing. It’s a skill few can master, but Nielsen made it look effortless. His expressions, his pauses, his ability to turn a simple line into a punchline—it’s like he had a secret formula for comedic gold. What’s most impressive is that even within the chaos of a parody, he maintained an aura of coolness, turning each silly moment into something that felt uniquely Leslie Nielsen. To this day, no one can fill the shoes he left behind. His work in Spy Hard proves that true comedic genius doesn’t just come from the lines you say, but from the way you say them—and Leslie Nielsen’s delivery was, and still is, unmatched. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/05/25 Full Review Marcus T Pure silliness, but what else would you expect. Non-stop zaniness. I chuckled throughout at the over the top situations. Pretty girls too. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/29/24 Full Review Christopher J this movie is hilarious but a little too stupid 4.5/5 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review Read all reviews
