Bosley Crowther New York Times It is really a rather silly, tedious notion of emotional conflict that Robert Smith and Ted Sherdeman have used for the core of their screenplay, and it is presented with neither style nor subtlety. Jul 31, 2020 Full Review Times (UK) Staff Times (UK) [St. Louis Blues' cast] brings to this story a simple, and at times a moving, sincerity. Jul 31, 2020 Full Review Variety Staff Variety What is lacking throughout St. Louis Blues is not the accurate story of W. C. Handy or the correct presentation of his music. What is really lacking is the spirit of W.C. Handy. Jul 31, 2020 Full Review Jesse L. DeVore New York Age Leaving the theatre, we reflected on an obviously Hollywood tampered story, crammed full of talents that overshadowed each other to climax in a hazy overcast jetted with sparks of laughter and rays of delightful -- evening-saving, songs. Dec 9, 2020 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Unfortunately, the character is not that much fun to watch - a fault largely attributable to the bland script, which is procedurally documental in its biographical attempt. Rated: 4/10 Aug 23, 2020 Full Review P.S. Harrison Harrison's Reports St. Louis Blues shapes up as a rather listless and disappointing entertainment that does not do justice to either the man or his music. Jim D Jim Dep Muscle Shoals, AL St. Louis Blues is a great movie and one that I've never even heard of until now. Nat King Cole was outstanding and I didn't know he was such a great actor along with all his musical talents. For me, it's top notch viewing for all the great musicians and singer featured, for the historical context, contributions and the story line. The inner turmoil that the main character , W.C. Handy was dealing with is something that a lot of professional musicians have had to face themselves, in different ways, including all the choices you have to make and temptations at every turn along the way of your journey. For non musicians alike, this movie deals with trying to seek the approval of your parents when making life decisions they don't agree with. I think most people can relate to this too. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/14/24 Full Review Audience Member all-black, all-star cast.. i was absolutely floored with the performances. ESPECIALLY when i saw the LEGENDARY Ella Fitzgerald! mother is stil in disbelief that i had never even heard of this movie until tonight. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member fun saw it on Amazon Prime Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/23/23 Full Review Audience Member Singer Nat King Cole stars as WC Handy. While the pacing is slow, this film is a generally a decent interpretation of the life and times of WC Handy. Black n White, the movie really involves a love story. Yes, you really will see Billy Preston (Beatles organist) as a young boy in this film. The movie stars the great Nat King Cole, but he is the weakest of the actors. Check this out Mahalia Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Pearl Bailey, and Eartha Kitt all sing in this movie. In addition, a young Billy Preston plays the young W.C. Handy and Ruby Dee gives a display of her acting talent in a small part. It is an old time biography that doesn't give the cast a chance to show their acting abilities but the signing is first class. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Nevermind that this is a great biopic of a legendary bluesman W.C.Handy - we have Nat King Cole, Eartha Kitt, Pearl Bailey, Cab Calloway, Mahalia Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, and Rudy Dee.
