Critics Consensus

There might be a good movie to be made from mashing up the slasher and musical genres; unfortunately, Stage Fright isn't quite it.

Mery H Stage fright 2024 is a “original” idea with a scream style and a very cold humor stage fright is a great option like the original from 1987 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/30/24 Full Review PridePosterStudios Cliché with a capital C. Missed opportunities. Terrible songs. I think I apologised to my friend for suggesting this one. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/21/24 Full Review steve d Good ideas with just terrible execution. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review john m Haunt that opera. So this is about a musical theatre summer camp. They aim to put on a knockoff Phantom of the Opera on the stage, but there is a troubled past behind that show. People died in the previous production, and people will die in this summer camp too since history always manages to find a way of repeating itself. Now I had not even heard of this before I was watching it. My good friends were looking for an inaugural movie to kick off spooky season, and given that we all have a theatre background and dabble in D-list movies, this seemed like the right fit. Stage Fight isn't a movie that you will retain much from, but if you're looking for a movie that you can laugh at over drinks, you could do a whole lot worse. Now, even though I was drinking and laughing at this, I will say that this is not a situation like The Room, i.e. there is not that earnest naiveté that only comes around when someone has too much money and doesn't know what they are doing happens. It happens all too rarely, and it is not what this movie is here to feature. These are people who are in on the joke, and you can tell so by how accurately they parody theater geeks. There are so many hormones that are firing around backstage, and they capture the pecking order that comes with any given production. It's literally campy, and of course, that comes with some unique kills. There is one in particular that stands out, and while I won't spoil it for you, I will say that they don't make you wait around until the end of the movie to see it, which I appreciated. There's just not a lot to this. I could criticize character motivations that aren't fully explained, like why this girl desires to play the same role that killed her mother, but that never at any point felt like it was a priority for this movie, so I won't prioritize it for this review. I will say that I was able to predict the killer fairly early on; the suspect list keeps getting narrower and narrower, and that could have been played slower to leave you guessing longer. The music isn't poorly executed or anything, but I will say that I just watched this over the weekend, and I can't even tell you how any of the music begins to go. You should already know if this movie is for you or not. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member The killer could have been developed more, but the mise en scène and cinematography were good for a slasher film. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/05/22 Full Review Liam D this was a lot better than I thought and is not for everyone but i found it a lot of fun Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/03/22 Full Review Read all reviews
