Allan C Dec 28 This was director Don Siegel's first commercial theatrical release, who’d previously worked as a montage editor on films such as CASABLANCA (he did the opening sequence with the maps), and who’d go on to direct classics such as INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS, DIRTY HARRY, ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ, and the under-appreciated CHARLEY VARRICK. It’s a Warner Bros short that tells a modern-day version of the Nativity. Three cowboys bearing gifts follow the neon star at a motel in the distance one night, where José and Maria Santos (Get it? Joseph and Mary.) are turned away from the motel. It’s a clever little script and is beautifully shot. I looked up the director of photography and saw it was shot by Robert Burks, who’d go on to shoot some of Hitchcock’s most memorable films, including VERTIGO, REAR WINDOW, NORTH BY NORTHWEST, and STRANGERS ON A TRAIN. The short is nothing revelatory, but it was a sweet, warm story that was nice to watch Christmas evening. See more Read all reviews
