      Critics Consensus

Starry Eyes pokes Hollywood's seedy underbelly to produce a refreshingly original horror story led by a breakout performance from Alex Essoe.

Darren D Starry Eyes from directors Kevin Kolsch & Dennis Widmyer, bring a tale of fake friendships, struggling actors & throw it all into a nightmarish dark decent of the personal price & lengths one will go for fame before spiralling into a slow transformation of pure blood-soaked rage. Lead actress Alex Essoe delivers a wonderful & bloody performance as the struggling wannabe star, that brings an unnerving mix of ambition, fear & uncomfortable panic-inducing self injuries.  Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/21/24 Full Review Sparky K Biggest waste of time ever. Pointless film with no coherent story. Don't bother. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/16/24 Full Review inta k quite stupid and pointless movie Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/13/24 Full Review Captain A The actress and the acting was great, the overall movie plot was not. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/28/24 Full Review Diamond W One of my all-time, B-movie faves!!! From the first line ("Welcome to Big Taters!") this movie sizzles. It's funny, titillating, campy, intelligent, brutal and truthful. The characterizations are awesome, the situations are plausible and the dialogue is sharp. The trick of this movie is not to take it seriously, but to take it literally. People think it is hyperbole about an ambitious actress. It's more like the actuality of any actress that has "made it" and become a household name, a step-by-step recipe. If the film goes "over the top" at it's violent end, that is a good thing which makes it enjoyable to fans of the genre, because real Hollywood violence is more pathetic and depressing than it is entertaining. Is it "faustian"? Of course. Is it cliché? Whatever. Truth is always cliché. The challenge is to make it pop. This film does. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/17/23 Full Review Star Power & E Was going through the menu on my peacock app & the poster on this movie caught my attention. This movie rattled my brain & pretty much gives everyone a perspective of Hollywood. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/22/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Clark Collis Entertainment Weekly Horror fans should keep their eyes on the filmmakers - and Essoe, who gives a star-making performance. Rated: B+ Nov 21, 2014 Full Review Simon Abrams RogerEbert.com "Starry Eyes" may leave you feeling hopeless, but its bleak vision of masochistic perfectionism is clear-eyed, cogent, and devastatingly unsettling. Rated: 3/4 Nov 14, 2014 Full Review Frank Scheck Hollywood Reporter The degeneration into familiar genre tropes reduces the impact of the wittily satirical set-up, with the result that Starry Eyes fails to live up to its initial promise. But the film indicates genuine talent on the part of its directors/screenwriters. Nov 13, 2014 Full Review Patrick Cavanaugh The Wolfman Cometh A slow-burn, surreal nightmare that honors paranoia-filled dramas of the '60s and '70s that has a shocking payoff to make it feel entirely original, all grounded by Essoe's tortured performance. Rated: 5/5 Sep 20, 2023 Full Review Kathi Maio The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction Equal parts occult horror and slasher flick, Starry Eyes is definitely a B movie, but fairly well done, as such. Mar 11, 2020 Full Review Nicholas Bell IONCINEMA.com Unfortunately, it becomes a grisly, exploitative Faustian romp in the second half, reduced to cliché and depending on a descent into violent gore.
