See more TheFilmCritics @TheFilmCritics 3d Behind its candy-colored facade, The Stepford Wives offers a clever premise about conformity, identity, and the suffocating pursuit of perfection. Its immaculate production design, extravagant costumes, and appealing cast give the film plenty of visual flair and comic charm, while the surreal suburban setting is consistently entertaining. Unfortunately, the satire rarely bites as deeply as it should, with safe jokes and an overly simplistic treatment of its themes blunting the film’s sharper potential. The central sci-fi twist is also frustratingly underexplained, leaving its mechanics muddled and its plot holes hard to overlook. Even so, a capable ensemble, polished presentation, and satisfying conclusion make this an enjoyable enough suburban nightmare—just one that never quite becomes the pointed satire it could have been. The creators took a feminist horror classic and turned it into a story about a woman who loses her mind over work — and made the villain a woman, naturally. The husband becomes a hero. I've never been this angry at an adaptation. They didn't just miss the point. They inverted it on purpose.
