Molly Haskell Film Comment Magazine It's the intent of this moving film to capture something that for obvious reasons is rarely attempted in memoir or movie, i.e., the experience of the deadly disease from the perspective of the sufferer rather than the caregivers. Feb 15, 2017 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) The subject matter may be tough, and the end-point inevitable, but the message we take away is defiant and ultimately uplifting. Rated: 4/5 Mar 8, 2015 Full Review Geoffrey Macnab Independent (UK) Writer-directors Glatzer and Westmoreland have written a rich, multi-layered screenplay that works equally well as family melodrama and as a meditation on language, identity and mortality. Rated: 3/5 Mar 6, 2015 Full Review Diana Tuova Spotlight on Film The merit of the film lies in its ability to dramatise so very delicately, movingly and powerfully a story of one woman’s battle with an incurable illness. Rated: 4.5/5 Aug 9, 2024 Full Review Tania Hussain The Hudsucker Watching [Julianne Moore] in a role like this is not just moving, but because she plays it so faultlessly, you can’t help but feel that you know her and are a part of her in every scene. Jul 28, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy One of the greatest performers of her generation, Julianne Moore deserved Oscars for Far from Heaven and Boogie Nights -- alas, she had to wait years before snagging a statue for her sensational turn here. Mike P Beautiful humanistic tear-jerker about English Professor Julianne Moore's descent into mental oblivion as she develops Alzheimer's at a young age. And then the family is challenged in terms of who will step up; and who will betray her; since she desperately needs a caregiver to survive at that point. It's all beautiful and heartbreaking; anchored by Moore's amazing performance. Kristen Stewart steps up too this time; and her line, "Don't worry Mom. I've got you," will have you reaching for your crying towell. The last scene where Kristen feeds the infantilized Moore is also very moving and heartbreaking. Overall an excellent showcase for superb acting! For similarly themed movies try: Awakenings and Charlie. The Elvis Costello humanist-ballad of 1989 "Veronica" is also the spiritual cousin of this fine film. I definitely recommend this. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/31/25 Full Review Stephen L "Still Alice" serves as a profound mechanism of empathy, immersing viewers into the harrowing journey of Dr. Alice Howland's battle with early-onset Alzheimer's disease. Julianne Moore's portrayal is nothing short of outstanding, capturing the nuanced decline of a brilliant mind with authenticity and grace. The film's direction and editing are executed with precision, presenting a narrative that is both educational and deeply moving. Supporting performances, notably from Alec Baldwin and Kristen Stewart, complement Moore's lead, enriching the story's emotional depth. While undeniably heart-wrenching, "Still Alice" transcends mere tragedy, offering viewers an opportunity to cultivate empathy and understanding for those affected by such conditions. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/15/25 Full Review sally b Great acting, but could be triggering if you have a loved one with Alzheimer's. Very realistic, and almost too sad at times, but worth watching if you're in the mood for a reflective piece. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/24/25 Full Review Audience Member Not my usual watch but saw it on a flight and was blown away! Very heart wrenching sad. Would recommend it to anyone Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/06/25 Full Review Sharang L Very poignant, very scary. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/02/24 Full Review Carl E Often a movie is so bad it's depressing, but Still Alice is so good that it is depressing. This film treats early onset Alzheimer's with humanity and dignity and Julianne More, who won a best acting Oscar as Alice, and Kristen Stewart are stellar in their respective roles. Alex Baldwin and the rest of the cast also turn in strong performances. So make some popcorn and prepare to be depressed. It is well worth it!
