Confidence trickster Stefan Orloff (Claude Rains) sets out to swindle French high society. He recruits Parisian dress model Nicole Picot (Kay Francis) to help him fool potential investors by wearing an expensive dress when accompanying him to lavish gatherings. Their successful scheme rakes in a fortune. But when a suave diplomat (Ian Hunter) steals Nicole's heart, her partner in crime struggles to balance his lies before they tumble like a house of cards.
