After war is declared by Austria against Serbia, some Serbs are drafted into the Hungarian army. Many resist, and three deserters seek refuge on the estate of Mayor Dushan Radovic (Walter Huston), where they are sheltered by Dushan's sympathetic wife, Irina (Kay Francis). Soon, Hungarian army Capt. Geza Petery (Nils Asther) arrives in search of the deserters. Irina privately confesses to Dushan, who arranges for the deserters to escape -- only to be betrayed by his ambitious steward.

Pare Lorentz Vanity Fair Kay Francis is always heavy-handed and lethargic in her work, but in such a production as Storm at Daybreak, she has some authority and an ability to - as the phrase has it - wear her clothes well.
