Julie F Fine acting and direction, with sweeping, rugged setting. However, arguably 43 mins too long, with the compelling peaks and troughs becoming schmaltzy as the narrative drags on. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/26/24 Full Review Manny R Beautiful, moving film. Outstanding photography, direction and script. I was reminded several times of the early Bergman. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/20/24 Full Review Monique J Beautifull movie, sober, to the point, beautifully acted, great actors, beautifull scenery. The movie lasts 3 hours, and that is not an minute too long. The music is a bit too bombastic sometimes. The movie does not need that. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/04/24 Full Review Toni B I was disappointed with Maja. I couldn't really immerse myself in the film while thinking about the forced dialect she spoke. It was definitely not Ålandic but more like some made-up Finland-Swedish dialect that lacks a real-life counterpart. Additionally, Maja herself gave a somewhat quirky impression. The entire lengthy episode with the Englishmen, portrayed as enemies in the film, felt off when, in reality, it was the Russian occupants that were our enemies. Also, some of the powerful scenes I remember from the TV series in the 70s were missing, including when Maja's house burnt down and the guy that got struck dead by a windmill. In the new Maja film, all emotional moments were drowned out by music at an excessively high volume (thank goodness we had ear protection). The only thing that was really, really good was the beautiful nature scenes that saved the entire film. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/22/24 Full Review Read all reviews
