Winner of the Venice Critics' Week Grand Prize, STRAIGHT CIRCLE is a wildly imaginative satire about what happens when borders drawn in the sand start to blur. Two enemy soldiers are stationed together on a remote border post in the middle of a vast, featureless desert. Their positions exist as a ceremonial symbol of an uneasy truce between two nations. The young men set about their pointless assignment battling the sweltering heat, mind-numbing boredom, and hostility of each other's company, until an ambling goat herder crosses the border and pushes their monotonous existence off its axis. As they grapple with their identities, loyalties, and the absurdity of their situation, their isolation slowly gives way to an outlandish nightmare that blurs the line between friend and foe. Visionary writer/director Oscar Hudson has crafted a surreal and absurdist satire about the arbitrary nature of borders and the shared humanity underlying nationalistic division. This is a film of sensory excess, where unhinged violence bleeds into bizarre horror.
