What to Know

Critics Consensus

Straight Jacket succeeds in its moments of lighthearted comedy, but ultimately collapses under the weight of its serious -- and clumsily imparted -- messages.

It has verve, color and energy, but there's something fundamentally bogus about it, and whenever it takes a turn into seriousness, entire moments fall apart. Go to Full Review

A fey and frisky farce with a fabulous fashion sense. Go to Full Review
Stephen Rebello The Advocate 04/20/2022
Straight-Jacket's themes -- the price of staying in the closet, the pain of being an unwitting beard, the McCarthy witch hunts that destroyed lives -- are way too rich to merely get popped like champagne bubbles in a campy comedy. Go to Full Review

On film, things play as flatly as any failed souffl. Go to Full Review

Until it tries to mean something, Straight-Jacket is an enjoyably manic little farce whose wit far exceeds its production budget. Go to Full Review

Sue F 10/21/2024 A delightful comedy with heart. I don't often watch indie movies but I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed this one. Everyone did a great job acting out their roles, especially Guy, Sally, and Jerry. Butler character probably had some of my favorite lines. It's really witty and shows a rare perspective from old hollywood. This movie needs more recognition. See more Ja K 04/17/2024 A very well-made movie base loosely based on Rock Hudson. Loved it! See more 07/20/2022 The movie had some good laughs, but then when it tried to get serious, came off melodramatic and hacky. Cartwright, Letscher, and Preston made the most of the somewhat flimsy material, but Greer's stiff, wooden performance made his character, who could veer into self-righteous self-importance, unlikeable. See more 01/21/2012 Very campy style with bright colours and cheesy lines and sore thumb CGI, but Michael Emerson's performance and the comedic timings keep it funny and going. See more 12/27/2010 Straight up, the funniest gay comedy I've seen. How nice to see a gay themed movie and not wince at the acting or production values. OK, well a few of the CGI establishment shots were wince-inducing, but I think they were supposed to be making fun of matte paintings. This one's a "don't miss".
