Doc N Very strange film, but stranger than that is me bothering to watch it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/10/22 Full Review Audience Member Like Reservoir Dogs, except instead of one of the thieves being an undercover cop, all of the thieves are stupid and incompetent. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a courageous directorial debut however it was underdeveloped and boring. Nothing happened for an hour and 20 minutes. The movie follows two teenage boys on their way to clean a trailer that belongs to one of the boys father and something interesting should happen around this time but never does. It took 40 confusing and boring minutes for the teenagers to make it to the trailer. Shortly after this finally happened a new character was introduced with only 15 minutes left in the movie. Maybe that was supposed to be a plot twist? Unfortunately we are not told enough about the characters to care about why this scene is important because there is a huge lack of character development, not to mention weak writing and just ok acting. Scenes without dialogue were almost well directed but edited poorly which was hard to ignore. Most scenes were too long with unnecessary dialogue and awkward body movements. It seemed as if no one knew what to do, except a couple of the adult actors who were most likely improvising. The director, writer, and editor are the same person which is never a good sign and he also plays one of the teenage boys. This director/writer/editor is only 16 so most of the mistakes are excusable but his father is in the movie business, so he had resources that he failed to take advantage of which made this a letdown. In my opinion it needed more work before being released and an experienced writer and editor could have really made a difference. Dennis Harvey Variety Though this suspense drama about two small-town youths who run afoul of fleeing big-city criminals feels a couple story beats short of a satisfying whole, it's admirably well-crafted within its mostly savvy limitations. Feb 10, 2017 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times The auteur's age, precociousness and pedigree automatically make "Stray Bullets" an item of interest, although fans of the Fessenden clan will be pleased to know that the movie's also pretty entertaining and only a little bit amateurish. Feb 9, 2017 Full Review Ken Jaworowski New York Times Mr. Fessenden's ambition is admirable, and there's more than a little raw skill on display. If this, his first feature, isn't always worth recommending, his talents are certainly worth encouraging. Feb 9, 2017 Full Review Todd Jorgenson Cinemalogue Some nice atmospheric touches are hardly warranted by the film's threadbare substance. Feb 17, 2017 Full Review Sherilyn Connelly SF Weekly The young Fessender has his own voice, and develops a strong enough sense of place and tone that even the many walking scenes don't feel like padding.
