Steve D It takes a compelling story and finds a way to make it uncompelling Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/06/23 Full Review Rene F This was a great film. It had the three E's of filmmaking. The acting was great, the story was great and the cinematography was amazing. It is entertaining, educated, and elevated - the three E's. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/23/22 Full Review bradford william y An absolutely OUTSTANDING tale of still pervasive discrimination that should be told more often --- presented via well-crafted script and rock sold directing, cast, photography and editing. Brandauer, Snipes and Pasdar in top form. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Russian defector trains an amateur boxer to a big win over Soviet champ with ESPN on hand. The amateur boxers here show much better defensive skills than the pros Rocky IV, which was made a year earlier. Somewhat predictable but pretty good. Variety Staff Variety A likable, but hardly compelling story. Aug 12, 2008 Full Review Time Out Director Roth never uses a short jab when he can take a wild swing, usually at the cold inhumanity of Soviet society. Jun 24, 2006 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times A lot of the film was shot in Brighton Beach, and looks authentic, but everything else is either synthetic or derivative, like the musical score. May 20, 2003 Full Review TV Guide Brandauer, however, takes what probably would have been an interesting character and makes it a fascinating one, bringing complexity, depth, and an understated sense of humor to Alek, adding just the right spin to otherwise unmemorable lines.
