Poor dad, hardworking mom, dilapidated yard, broken son. How did the Ma family fall behind on the road to prosperity in Slinky Town? Ma Chenggang and Chunlan, who "have no oil in the soup and no money in their pockets," ride their donkey to work, living in poverty. Their son, Ma Jiye, is their only hope of turning their fate around. Ma Jiye is very promising, excelling academically every year, tough and determined. But as Ma Jiye grows up, he gradually perceives that the people around him are becoming more and more strange....

I think unfortunately this is totally lost on English speaking audiences. I think you'll miss just about all of the humor in this if you're not a native speaker/culturally in touch. A disappointing ending doesn't help much either.

Humorously portrayed a couple of “helicopter” parents’ commitment to setting a path for their son to be their successor. Very funny and meaningful. A lot of parents can identify a shade of themselves thru these characters in the movie. Highly recommend. Two thumbs up.

Saw this movie in Chinatown Melbourne. With my son, my Chinese daughter in law and her parents. And a younger Chinese friend. It was a good family movie. Representative of the pressure parents put on their child to succeed whilst avoiding the grandparents spoiling them. Recommend it.

I don’t speak Mandarin, the language of the movie. And the subtitles in Cantonese an d English were small. It seemed like a take on everything everywhere all t once. Multiverrsque. Poor family that was not poor at all. What son gets the money. But those who understood the language enjoyed it immensly.
