Critics Consensus

A cool scoop of cliché that doesn't completely melt under pressure, Summer of 03 goes down easy thanks to Becca Gleason's earnest direction.

Matt Fagerholm RogerEbert.com Though the film's screwball energy keeps things relatively sunny, neither Gleason nor King fail to take the central protagonist's emotions seriously. Rated: 3/4 Sep 28, 2018 Full Review Kimber Myers Los Angeles Times It never transcends its teen movie origins to become something more. Sep 28, 2018 Full Review Teo Bugbee New York Times Vacant in emotion and in cinematic perspective, the movie looks back 15 years but struggles to make an impression longer than 15 minutes. Rated: 3.5/5 Jan 22, 2019 Full Review Ayurella Horn-Muller Film Threat What Summer '03 teaches its audience is that control is an illusion. Tying into the realism of the production is another lesson: not every interaction or human connection has to have a fairytale ending. Nov 2, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member I really enjoyed this movie. It was cute and funny, with a bit of serious thrown in. Not sure it sets a good example for teenagers, but it is probably realistic like it or not. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/22/23 Full Review Audience Member It's good well written Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/23 Full Review Audience Member Dreamy but overrated. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member So boring I did not finish it. Hilarious? Hardly. Not even a chuckle. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member The movie does not look RIGHT!!!!!!! The characters had no type of human emotion or expression other than the emotion you put poorly reading a book for kids. Also, the dialogue sounded like it was LITERALLY taken word per word from the original novel. It felt super old fashioned and even faked. The shots were WEIRD, giving a wanna-be "twilight vibe" without the cool tone filter and stable camera work; it looked unimaginative and boring. Adding more fire to the flame, the main character looked like a thirteen-year-old wearing what a college student would wear to a party FOR CHURCH. I don't know if that was just to be comedic or to protests and offend the church, but it was AWKWARD and I am not religious at all. It feels like they were trying too hard to make a funny and emotional movie but FAILED and fell on their own butts. Only 40 minutes in and I want to cry. Also, all the actors looked like pre or early teens so they seemed out of place most of the time, like when kids play pretend and dress up like their parents. I had Dylans' voice, from Dylan is in trouble, in my head all the time while watching the movie. I hope he comments this trash in Until I Hate Myself because I definitely hated myself for even watching a second of this sh*t. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/11/23 Full Review Audience Member In the warm glow of a not-so-long-ago summer 16 year old Jamie is tasked by her grandmothers final words to "learn how to give a good blowjob", sending her off onto a journey of sexual and self-understanding and exploration. Beyond the surface level of Jamie's goal to fuck the almost priest is her need to be loved by the people in her life. A genre usually reserved for Seth Rogan and Jonah Hill is embraced by a young Joey King who gives the film heart beneath its raunchy exterior.
