Phil Gallo Variety It's standard blaxploitation settings and elements -- crime fighters and criminals, pimps and hookers, a pool hall and a brothel -- but the presence of the Outer Space Employment Agency makes it extraordinary. Apr 8, 2008 Full Review Jonathan Rosenbaum Chicago Reader Its lighthearted surrealist high jinks, dressed up with SF trappings and black-power rhetoric, make for pleasant enough viewing, but the music seems strictly incidental. Jul 7, 2005 Full Review Jon Pareles New York Times Space Is the Place has more than a few hokey moments, but it also illuminates Ra's work. For him, outer space wasn't just a gimmick or a convenient source of song titles. It was a zone where racism was inoperative. Jul 7, 2005 Full Review Cole Smithey ColeSmithey.com Rated: 0/5 Jan 25, 2006 Full Review Lynne D. Johnson PopMatters Not that it's a bad film, but perhaps only true Sun Ra devotees, and those hoping to learn more about the artist would only really appreciate it. Jul 7, 2005 Full Review Rumsey Taylor Not Coming to a Theater Near You Space is the Place has the requisite style and sexuality of blaxploitation cinema, and spares the violence and generic title score. delysid d Kind of a cool movie, more like a long music video. Not the most entertaining but I liked the 70s afrofuturism vibe combined with elements of a Blaxploitation film. Two thumbs up. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/06/23 Full Review Audience Member Although it has cheezy special effect, this movie really had a good message, especially to the black community. The music was also nice.
