Craig Mathieson The Age (Australia) The cast is very good, but each of them is filling out a role that could have been better illustrated with some extra detail. These are people trying their best to navigate an impossible ordeal while falling prey to the momentary satisfaction of transferring their pain onto each other. Ben D Suncoast sits in that section of perfectly serviceable movies that will scratch the itch of family drama/coming-of-age issues, but here, set against the backdrop of a political moment (the Terry Schiavo case) that feels like it happened in a parallel universe. Dorothy (Nico Parker) has been tasked with caring for her vegetative brother (Parker Sack) with her single mom, Kristine (Laura Linney). Eventually, Adam (Sack) is moved to hospice care (“Suncoast”) where Terri Schiavo just so happens to also be located. While traversing her precious state as a teen, Dorothy must also traverse activists and protestors on both sides of the “right to die” issue. Woody Harrelson as Paul is one of these activists (he’s pro-life) and strikes up somewhat of a friendship with Dorothy, but it isn’t nearly as prominently featured in the movie as one would expect (likely to the movie’s detriment). The plot mainly revolves around Dorothy attempting to solidify some sense of normalcy (making friends, meeting boys, acquiring a fake ID, going to prom) in her chaotic life. In between, she fights with her mom and talks to Paul. The acting is strong— there’s an absolutely insane, jaw-dropping moment from Kristine — and it pulls on the heartstrings (how could it not, it’s a dying kid), but the movie just never fully materializes into something really worth sinking into. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/23/25 Full Review Audience Member A hidden gem. A deeply moving study of grief with a truly wonderful performance from Nico Parker. I did not expect to be as deeply moved as I was. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/26/24 Full Review Kyle M Inspired platform brings cynically humble buildup towards palpable, unexpectedly profound resonance because the directorial grip tightens relatability under subtle thematic connections, while pleasantly granting coming-of-age outlets as the brightened, performatively comforting balance. (B+) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/29/24 Full Review Cuan Chai M Genuinely one of the best movies I have ever watched. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Ilze L Definitely brings out emotions, even felt a tear drop or a few. Loved that you can also see the character development, how they overcame different situations. Actors did an amazing job. Worth a watch! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/12/24 Full Review Melissa C Though the plot had its moments of predictability, the casting was phenomenal and the story had lots of heart. I was entertained from the moment I hit play until the credits rolled - and left considering the themes of the film long after. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/09/24 Full Review Read all reviews
