Gino (Raf Vallone) is a soccer star whose second-tier team has been given the opportunity to show their stuff in a match against a top team. Just before the game, Gino is offered a large cash sum to play poorly, and he considers taking the money. He decides against it but is hurt just prior to the match, which slows him down considerably. Though the crowd and fellow player Carlo (Marcello Mastroianni) believe Gino is throwing the game, the star refuses to give in and plays to win.
